A Contemporary
Berkshire Landscape Garden
Goal:
To
create beautiful, liveable spaces immediately surrounding a large, re-modeled
contemporary house. It was also very important to shape and define the
land so the house fit comfortably into the surrounding landscape. The
gardens needed a strong, contemporary feeling that flowed with the landscape,
helped integrate the house into its natural setting and took advantage
of the far-reaching views. The owners also wanted their gardens to be
rich in color, fragrance and texture with for a long succession of bloom,
and be reasonable to maintain.
Design Description:
A dramatic
estate landscape with spectacular views of the Berkshires surrounding
a contemporary house. Planned and developed over a three year period in
concert with Brian McCarthy Inc. of New York and others, the garden surrounding
the house features a framework of terraces and stone walls with bold sweeps
of perennials and shrubs selected for a long succession of bloom and brilliant
autumn color. Extensive plantings of spring bulbs begin the flowering
season.
